Parenting: Conversations about Teenagers and Cultural Differences

Saturday May 5th 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM - Elmhurst

Parenting is one of the most challenging roles in our adult lives. Teenagers and adolescents present a unique challenge. I invite you to join me and other parents in a conversation, in which we can co-create a space to discuss ideas and beliefs about parenting within South Asian immigrant families. We bring into parenting our own life experiences, upbringing, and the influence of our cultural context. In our time together, we will learn how to:

- Navigate cultural influences in our parenting

- Manage the cultural difference between ourselves and our children

- Better understand teenage and adolescent development, including the neuroscience to understand this critical growth period

- Promote collaboration with our teen/adolescent

This discussion will be led by Swati Bakre, LCPC

* This workshop is intended for parents in the community and is not a professional training that provides CEUs

Workshops and Trainings for Professionals

Integrative Trauma Recovery Group Workshop

Friday April 6th 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM - Skokie

Even though we know that group therapy can be a powerful therapeutic intervention, have you noticed that your clients that are most impacted by Developmental and Complex Trauma have trouble feeling safely connected in groups, are often re-traumatized by their own narrative or those of other group members, or become overwhelmed and frozen by the internal chaos of their own internal traumatic memory traces?  Anita Mandley, along with Francine Kelley, have developed a group treatment model for Complex PTSD that moves away from a reductionist perspective of treating complex developmental trauma to a more constructivist, integrative stance. The clinical interventions integrate Psychoeducation, Somatic Experiencing, Yoga, DBT and Expressive Therapies.  Grounded in the Collaborative Change Model, the stage driven integrated organizational process allows for the gentle unfolding and emergence of reparative interpersonal experiences, the expansion of choices for self-regulation, and new management strategies that can heal traumatic wounds.  The task is to facilitate a therapeutic process that embodies current neuroscience and practice based clinical wisdom. This workshop combines didactic and experiential learning.

You will learn how to:

  • Co-create a safe therapeutic process through The Collaborative Change Model, an Integrative Stage Oriented organizational treatment model.
  •  Titrate the therapeutic process by moving between top-down and bottom-up processing
  • Expand tolerance and choices for self-awareness, self-regulation and emotional experiencing
  • Transform the traumatic imprints without requiring the narrative, thereby reducing the risk of activating overwhelming shame and re-traumatization
  • Restore the capacity for Earned Secure Attachments
  • Restore the capacity for adaptive boundaries and effective defensive strategies
